SOUTENIR VERCINGETORIX oil on canvas 34 by 45 cm.; 13 1/2 by 17 3/4 in. LITERATURE Marc Sandoz, Les peintures de la Renaissance a Fontainebleau et le manierisme italien, in G.B.A., January 1970, p.48-49. illustrated plate 9; Marc Sandoz, Theodore Chasseriau, catalogue raisonne des peintures et estampes, Paris 1974, no.47, illustrated plate XXXVI. The subject matter appears to be an illustration of an episode in the Gaul's war reported by Caesar (Book VIII. Chapter XL). However, this could have also been inspired by a mannerist work in the Chateau de Fontainebleau in which Caesar hears the news of Vercingetorix's rebellion. This painting is in the Galerie Francois Ier where Chasseriau would come and study the decorations.
