Thomas Day Walnut Armoire
Mid 19th Century. Research scholars at the North Carolina Museum of History have indicated that the design of this piece is similar to that appearing in John Hall's 1840 book "The Cabinet Maker's Assistant". The apron is consistent with Thomas Day's work; the carving of rosebud and tobacco leaf with rocailles is found on documented chairs made by Day. The dovetails are "a little large" and atypical, but Day had many apprentices by this period. The vertical rear panels are found especially in larger Day pieces, such as this wardrobe. Three part construction. Elaborate floral carved cornice above carved and ogee crown. Two bookmatched burl veneer cupboard doors flanking shaving stand with mirrored door and cupboard, above walnut top. All over four burl veneer drawers. Elaborate scalloped apron and bracket feet. Glass and brass original hardware. 97" x 77" x 25". Ex James Coman Estate, West Jefferson, North Carolina, to benefit the Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust.
