Thomas Sherlock Hodgson 1924 - 2006 Canadian oil on canvas Interior Still Life 39 1/4 x 28 3/4 inches 99.7 x 73 centimeters signed and dated 1961 and on verso signed, titled, dated and inscribed ""M 3/61"" and ""43 St. Olaves Rd"" Literature:David Burnett and Marilyn Schiff, Contemporary Canadian Art, 1983, page 53 Provenance:Private Collection, British Columbia Hodgson's work has been featured in more than 20 museum exhibitions, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Calgary's Glenbow Museum, the Galerie d'arts contemporains de Montréal, the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. His work is characterized by a radical and independent response to New York Abstract Expressionism within the context of Painters Eleven, a group of Canadian abstract painters based in Toronto in the 1950s. With no single line as a focus, there is an energetic directness to his work. The colourful palette and composition of Interior Still Life are unrestrained and chaotic but meld successfully to produce a dynamic composition. What drew the public to Hodgson was the spontaneous gestural quality of his paintings. As Burnett writes, it was "this raw energy which made a special mark in the exhibitions of Painters Eleven and reviews frequently made special mention of Hodgson." This work carries the vitality of the best work of Hodgson, who was the youngest member of the Painters Eleven group.
