TIM LEURA TJAPALTJARRI CIRCA 1929-1984 FATHER / SON / GRANDFATHER DREAMING C.1978 47.5 by 62.5 cm Synthetic polymer powder paint on composition board Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist at Papunya by Geoffrey Bardon in January 1978 Private collection, New South Wales A recurring theme in the oeuvre of Tim Leura is that of death spirits represented as skeletal figures. His paintings regularly feature patches of overlaid dots, often painted wet into wet, to create a hazy atmospheric effect. The effect was also employed by his brother, Clifford Possum, as early as 1972, to render fire, smoke and ash. In Leura's paintings, the muted colours produce a sombre, even sinister effect. The images may relate to the Fire Dreaming at Warlukurlangu, south of Yuendumu, and depicts the two sons of the Blue Tongued Lizard ancestor, Lungkata, who were punished by their father for not sharing their food with him, as tradition decrees. Lungkata created a bushfire that swept across the land, engulfing the two boys.
