Autograph Letter Signed, "AdeTocqueville," to "Sir and dear colleague," in French, agreeing to meet Dr. [Herman?] Merivale. 1 page, 8vo; compete vertical separation with minor loss to signature repaired with backing, paper strips mounted along left edge recto and right edge verso. sold as is. Paris, 16 May 1850

Notes: "Though I am taking the medicine of silence, my regimen is not so absolute that I cannot allow myself a few conversations. I will be much charmed to receive Dr. Merivale. I would go get him if I were in a better state. . . . [H]e will always be sure to find me in the morning at 10 o'clock. . . . You would be very kind to accompany him, if you have nothing better to do that day."
Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French writer and statesman, author of Democracy in America, and minister of foreign affairs in 1849.
