Description: Two 18th/19th C. American ladder back side chairs with rush seats: first c. 1720, maple, oak, and ash, furniture scholar Robert Trent compares these finials to examples of Budington chairs of Fairfield, CT, altered left finial, ended out, 37 1/8" h.; and second c. 1840, oak and birch, left finial replaced, replaced seat and rung, scattered repairs, 34 1/4" h. [Antiques collector, furniture restorer, and author Henry Hammond Taylor (Connecticut, 1878-1933) kept a detailed journal recording where and when he purchased early American antiques. He noted that the first side chair had had "one finial restored and feet built up about 3 inches." Prior to his death, Taylor bequeathed items in his collection to descendants.] [The Taylor Collection]
