u *JEAN AUGUSTE DOMINIQUE INGRES FRENCH, 1780-1867 SPINNING WOMAN oil on canvas 12 1/4 by 9 3/8 in. 31.1 by 23.8cm. The present painting has also been known as the Spinning Woman of Palermo and Spinning Woman of Parma, as well as Peasant Woman of Salerno. It was called Fileuse de Palerme in the Coutan-Hauguet catalogue of 1889, and Paysanne de Palerme in the Cheramy collection. The Coutan-Hauguet family, whose wax seal from the sale of their collection is on the stretcher of the painting, were close friends with Ingres. Both catalogues incorrectly described the painting as being on copper, although a later edition of the Cheramy collection catalogue corrects this mistake, noting its correct support as on canvas. The work is called simply Spinning Woman in Wildenstein, who notes that it may be identical to a small study of a woman recorded in his Cahier IX, thereby dating it to his first sojourn to Italy. We are grateful to the Wildenstein Institute, Paris for confirming the authenticity of the present lot. It will be included in the re-issue of the catalogue of paintings by Ingres.
