Lot 6635: Uniform ensemble of the "Guardia Civica Pontificia" from the pontificate of Pius IX (1846 - 1878)

Description: Helmet for enlisted men with black varnished leather body (dents), gilded papal emblem "Pio IX", velvet-lined, gilt chinstrap (some scales loose) with rosette side posts, large gold-silver metal cockade, gilt cruciform base and slim, faceted spike with red horsehair plume (cut), red cloth lining, black leather sweatband. Comes with tunic made of fine, dark blue cloth (moth damages) with red piping, French cord cuffs, smooth gilt buttons, tricolour Italian breast cross, two gilded epaulettes, light, stitched inner lining. Furthermore, a leather belt with non-ferrous metal buckle and applied initials "GC". Moreover tricolour silk rep sash. Partly damaged, signs of age. On July 5th, 1847 Pope Pius IX. authorised the establishment of the civilian guards in Rome. A very rare ensemble from circa 1850.
