Description: 11 May 1855 PENNSYLVANIA. PHILADELPHIA. Shares of $50. blue. No 3830. Around 1811, the Schuylkill and Susquehanna companies merged into the Union Canal Company of Pennsylvania. By 1840 the Canal represented an investment of 6 million USD and it had become one of the busiest canals in the USA. In the early days, the principal goods transported were timber and farm products. However, the Canal started to really prosper once stone coal (Pennsylvania anthracite) was becoming wanted.
