Lot 1755: Unique Model 1909 "USMC" Production "Spare Frame" Colt Double Action Revolver with USMC Holster
December 5, 2009
Moline, IL, USALive Auction
This is a very rare late production "Spare Frame" revolver as produced under the Colt Model 1909 USMC Revolver contract. It was noted that late in the production of the USMC contract, Colt produced a set of exactly "50" spare frames as extras during the production cycle in case an in-house replacement was required. These frame were produced with all the correct USMC characteristic of the rounded butt, the correct "USMC and No." along with the lanyard loop on the bottom of the butt in front of the lanyard loop with the correct varnished and checkered walnut grips. The unused frames were later used in the assembly of commercial New Service revolvers that were numbered in the later production sequence. This block of spare frames were serial numbered in a separate block numbered from "1 to 50" with this specific pistol having serial number "31". Three other frames (numbered 2, 19 and 36) have also surfaced from this block, and are documented in the book on Colt New Service Revolvers, by Murphy. This specific pistol also has serial number "33489" on the back side of the cylinder crane, which identifies the serial number sequence and production timeframe when it was actual assembled and sold as a commercial production New Service revolver, which was actually in mid-1911. The top of the barrel is marked with the Hartford address and the 1884, 1900 and 1905 patent dates in two lines. The left side of the barrel has the designation: "COLT D.A. 45". The Rampant Colt trademark in a stylized "C" is located on the left side of the frame behind the cylinder latch. The revolver has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish. The trigger and hammer are heat blued with the sides of the hammer being polished. The ejector rod and lanyard loop have a casehardened finish. The serial number, "031" is located on the inside of the frame and the cylinder crane is numbered "33489". It is complete with an original Model 1909 "USMC" marked leather holster with "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL 1909, H.E.K." on the back of the belt loop.
BBL: 5-1/2 inch round
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 031
Condition Report: Fine with approximately 50% of the original Colt blue finish overall with even wear on the revolver, especially on the sides of the barrel, cylinder and the grip straps as well as all the edges and high spots. The grips are also in fine condition showing nice color with a flattening of the checkering on both sides from honest use. The holster is in very good condition overall with clear visible markings with tight stitching, (but missing the toe plug) with age cracking overall the leather surfaces. Still a very scarce and desirable holster with "USMC" markings. A very scarce, early production Colt New Service revolver.
