Description: Oji Takinogawa (Waterfall-River in Oji - 王子瀧の川). Original color woodblock print from the series Toto meisho (“Famous Places of the Capital City“ 東都名所), published 1835/45. Signed: Hiroshige ga. Publisher: Sanoya Kihei.
Near Oji - in Hiroshiges time a village beyond the Northern city border of Edo - Ojigawa once burrowed a deep bed through the foothills toward the wide Musashi Plain. After the passage of the last major obstacle, Asuka Mountain (Asukayama), it flowed as the “Tamed River“ in the land once covered by rice fields. For the short, but waterfall-rich route, the river received the name Takinogawa – derived from taki (滝), Japanese for waterfall.
