Description: Valentin de Boulogne, coeval copy from
"Concert of four musicians and a drinking man", oil on canvas, in a coeval giltwood frame.

This painting was exposed in June 1946 in the Baltimore Museum of art during the exhibition "Musical instruments and their portrayal in art".

It was published in march 1958 by Roberto Longhi "A propos de Valentin" for the French magazine "La revue des arts"; in "The Burlington Magazine", June 1960; by Benedict Nicolson "Caravaggism in Europe", v.1, 1990, p.204.

The painting comes from the Francois Tronchin (1704-1798) collection, a Swiss lawyer who bought it from a man called Koester. There is also an engraving executed in 1786 by J. CouchÚ: this engraving was believed by Brejon de Lavergnee and Cuzin as not referred to the original painting. Tronchin collection was sold in an auction in Paris (march 1801)

Published with pictures on "Valentin de Boulogne", Marina Mojana, Eikonos Edizioni Milano 1989, pic 102. Critical text by Professor Francesca Cappelletti.
