CATALOGUE NOTE
The sitter was one of the six sons of Colin Mackenzie of Portmore and his wife Elizabeth, daugther of Sir William Forbes Bt. of Pitsligo. His grandfather Alexander MacKenzie bought the Portmore estate in the early eighteenth century and the family continued to live there until it was sold in 1897.
This picture is an autograph version of the portrait sold from the estate of the sitter's great nephew in 1918 which is now at the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas and which was painted shortly before the sitter's death in 1822.
