Atlas Fisico y Politico de la Republica de Venezuela. 19 double-page engraved mapsheets with original hand-color, lithographed pictorial title-page, 8pp. Folio, 21 3/4x14 1/4 inches, cloth backed original marbled paper boards, worn and partially disbound, wants for rebinding; some toning and intermittent foxing, 9th map sheet with a tear central left, 14th mapsheet loose and with edgewear. Bookplate of Judson Wood, ink stamp on rear endpaper of the Mene Grande Oil Company dated 1937. Caracas, 1840
Notes: A monumental achievement in the mapping of South America, this is considered to be the first comprehensive atlas of modern Venezuela. Codazzi provides in-depth geographical and political information of the country as it was evolving during the early period of the nineteenth-century. Additional consideration is given to the surrounding countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Colombia honored his cartographic achievements by attaching his name to their national geographic society, the Instituto Geográfico Agustin Codazzi. Phillips, Atlases 2775.
