General George McClellan Shield Type Civil War Dog Tag
1861-64-Dated, Union Civil War "In the War of 1861, 2 & 3 & 4," Two-Piece Dog Tag, with top attached General George McClellan "Portrait Shield," Brass, Choice Extremely Fine.
This is an extremely rare attached George McClellan Portrait Shield Design Pinback Badge type. Top Brass Pinback measures about 3/4" x 1" in shape of Heraldic Shield, bears head-and-shoulder profile image of General George McClellan and the word "Union." Hole at bottom with short chain link attached to the brass Dog Tag below, measuring 1.25" round, with Heraldic Eagle and inscribed "In the War of 1861, 2 & 3 & 4," and again "Union." On the reverse is the name, residence and rank of the veteran: "Robert Newell. Com. 3rd N.Y. Cav." and "Brockport, Monroe Co., N.Y." Original pin on upper segment is lacking, else extremely fine clean sharply detailed in condition. We have only encountered two other examples of this design type, both sold in then 2005 John J. Ford Collection Sale selling in excess of $2,000 each. Very Rare.
