Lot 1040: Victorian SHEET MUSIC Antique 19th Century Pop Culture
by National Book Auctions
November 18, 2012
Freeville, NY, USALive Auction
Details: This very large lot of antique sheet music, most of it beautifully engraved, dates from the second half of the 19th century. It provides an entertaining mirror to the popular culture of the day, when the only way to listen to the latest hits was to learn to play their piano transcriptions or other instrumental arrangements. Selections include favorite composers like John Philip Sousa and Carl Krause (signed), an American imitation of "The Mikado." Women composers are also represented. Much of the music is written for piano or flute, but organ, violin, mandolin, etc. are also indicated. Rounding out the lot is a copy of "Kunkel's Musical Review" dated 1884.
