October 27, 2016
London, United KingdomLive Auction
Description: extensive panoramic scroll of this once-in-a-generation wine festival, original hand-coloured lithograph on 30 plates, joined, c.185 x 14, 350mm., linen-backed, occasional printer's or rolling creases, plates 5 to 30 numbered in sequence, though most erroneously amended in pencil, otherwise generally clean, preserved in a contemporary burgundy straight-grained morocco cylinder, lacking ends, Lausanne, Spengler & Cie., . Although the Confrérie des Vignerons of Vevey was originally founded in the middle ages, it was not until 1797 that the fête was revived, in part to highlight advances in viticulture, but also to reward the workers. It has been staged once every generation ever since. The fête of 1833 was held over two days in August, involving nearly 800 participants pulling numerous floats depicting the seasons, Bacchus, Ceres and other deities depicted here.
