Description: 9th-11th century AD. A bronze chatelaine comprising a radiating plaque with slots to the central ring, ring-and-dot and pellet detailing, six dependant chains with implements: a bronze ear-scoop, bronze tweezers, two bronze jingles, a stone bead on a bronze earring, a latch-lifter key, one with tool absent. Cf. Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, tables 269, 270. 88 grams total, 23cm overall (9"). Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972.
