Description: 8th-12th century AD. A silver mount with strap lop to the top surface decorated with interlinked star with three human faces to the edge; three attachment lugs to the back. 2.23 grams, 17mm (1/2"). From an old Munich collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000. Number three was a sacred and symbolic number in Viking mythology. We can find its reflection in number of named Norns, trio of gods that created humans, three sacred wells under three roots of Yggdrasil, three monstrous children of Loki and Angrboda, three races of giants, three cockerels crowing during the ragnarok (one in each world), Odin spent three night with Gunlod in exchange for the poetry mead and many others.
