Description: 9th-10th century AD. An iron stirrup comprising a foot-rest, curved and lozengiform in plan, D-section shoulders with polyhedral bulbs and inlaid silver pellets, slot in the pointed top. Cf. Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, plate 34. 201 grams, 15cm (6"). Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972.
