Description: VU CAO DAM
(french, 1908-2000)
MATERNITÉ
Signed and dated 1963 bottom left, oil on canvas.
21 3/4 x 18 1/4 in. (55.3 x 46.4cm)
provenance:
Private Collection, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: The paint has been very thickly applied to the canvas such that the surface is relatively heavy. There is a also certain sheen to the surface, perhaps because of a particularly thick varnish. There is some wear to the surface in some of the areas where the paint has been heavily applied. For example, in the eyes and foreheads of both faces. There is occasional surface soiling evident in areas as well. There is some shallow cracking present in several areas, for example a shallow crack running along the far right side of the mothers cheek, beginning at her hairline and extending in a curving pattern intermittently down her neck. There is another shallow crack extending from her right eye through her mouth and chin and down into her neck. Another similar crack running from her center hairline down her face and out into the hairline of the child. All of these are rather unobtrusive and mostly visible only when one looks very closely. Some similar areas of shallow intermittent cracking in the clothing of both figures and in the woman's right hand and in a few background areas, again mostly visible only when one looks very closely. Otherwise, in good condition.

Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.
