Description: Webster, Noah. A COMPENDIOUS DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. Hartford and New-Haven, 1806. 8vo. xxiii, [1], 408 pp., lacking pages 385-394. Full period calf, the whole with some scuffs, tearing to head of spine. Title and pastedown with early ink, contents rather spotted throughout, some soiling, a couple of closed tears, section near end with large water-stains (most noticeable to last several leaves.) Fair. ******************************** First edition with Webster's adapted "American" spelling. This preceded Webster's American Dictionary, printed in quarto in 1828. Provenance: David Bushnell's copy with his signature in ink on front pastedown. Bushnell was a Revolutionary war soldier who would eventually become a captain in the Continental Army, but he is best known as having created the first submarine ever used in combat (the "Turtle.")
