WEINMANN, Johann Wilhelm (1683-1741). Duidelyke Vertoning, Einiger Duizend in alle Vier Waerelds Deelen wassende Bomen, Stammen... Amsterdam: Zacharias Romberg, 1746-39-48. 9 volumes comprising 4 of text and 5 plate volumes. Folio (405 x 250 mm.) With mezzotint frontispiece and 2 portraits printed on blue paper, titles printed in red and black, 1,025 engraved plates partly color printed and then hand-finished. Contemporary half speckled calf and paper over boards, spines gilt-ruled with raised bands and morocco title labels. Condition: faint dampstain in upper margin of plates 21-35 just outside plate line, title of second plate volume loose with increasing dampstain from plates 146-234 and plate 201 browned, third volume containing plates 326-521 with faint dampstain to lower margin, title to fourth plate volume restored, some color loss to plate 723, closed tear to fore margin of 761; raised bands and joints rubbed, bottom edges worn, corners exposed, some scuffing, skinning to boards. Provenance: purchased from Charles Traylen, 1972, $6,181. ONE OF THE EARLIEST WORKS TO USE COLOR PRINTING FROM A SINGLE PLATE. The work is a comprehensive record of plants cultivated in the 18th century, the depictions actually largely the work of the great flower painter Georg Dionysius Ehret, who fell out with Weinmann over a dispute over money and his name was expunged from the 500 plates he had worked on.
