Lot 2298: Western Asiatic Amlash Sheet Gold Neck Ornament
December 9, 2016
London, United KingdomLive Auction
Description: 12th-10th century BC. A sheet gold ornament comprising a D-shaped plaque and two parallel-sided lateral extensions forming a choker-length collar; bands of repoussé pellets to the outer edges of the bands and plaque and a central saltire. 8.97 grams, 17cm (6 3/4"). Property of a central London gentleman; formerly in the Tony Brandon collection, London, UK; acquired 1989; collection number 1. The shape recalls necklaces with large pendants worn in everyday life, but the stylistic form of this piece would suggest that it was used to adorn an image in a temple. In the ancient world it was common for cult images to be adorned with clothes and jewellery that were changed on a daily basis as part of the service to the deity by the priesthood and nobility.
