Description: WILLIAM DE MORGAN (1839-1917)
FOUR RARE 'FOUR TILE CARNATION' TILES, CIRCA 1880
early Chelsea period on Poole Architectural blanks , mounted on a board (4)
each tile 15.5cm square

Condition Report: Four tiles are in good general condition and are cemented onto a ply backing
There is fine allover crazing to the surface of the glaze
Bottom right tile has minor chippings to the right hand edge
Top right hand tile has two flakes to the glaze, one on the right hand edge, and one near the top edge; small firing flaw to the bottom left hand corner
Top left has minor chippings along the left edge, otherwise good
Bottom left hand tile has small chip to bottom edge and right hand edge, minor firing flaws to the left hand and bottom edges

Note: This rare four-tile design is one of the most complex De Morgan produced. An example of its use can be seen in a marble fireplace designed by Richard Norman Shaw around 1879.
