signed Wm. M. Chase, u.r. oil on canvas Painted circa 1881. According to Mr. D. Frederick Baker, "[The present painting] is one of a number of ... small works similar in feeling to Seated Figure as well as large canvases such as The Moorish Warrior [Brooklyn Museum], by Chase which feature figures from North Africa. The signature on Seated Figure dates the work from the early 1880s ... [The artist] did visit Spain several times, first ... in 1881 when he spent two months, and these North African subject paintings may likely be related to this painting expedition." This painting will be included in Ronald G. Pisano's catalogue raisonné of works by William Merritt Chase. A letter from Mr. Baker will accompany this lot.
