Notes: PROPERTY OF AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION
William Zorach's Spirit of the Dance was one of several designs submitted for the lobby of the new Radio City Music Hall in 1930, and chosen to be the primary sculpture. The figure, depicting a kneeling dancer at the finale of the dance, was originally planned at 36 inches high. However, a three foot figure would have been too small for its intended space and the height of the sculpture was increased to six and a half feet, proportionally making the figure itself nearly nine-feet. While the figure at Radio City Music Hall was cast in aluminum, Zorach made only six bronze editions of the work.
