Description: [Manuscript] Ciphering book (for math), maintained by Willis Gaar (1792-1866), son of Abraham & Tabitha Gaar from Madison County, VA. Computations, word problems, and statements of mathematical concepts, as Willis Gaar learned them in school. Most computations undated but p19 has Practice May 4th 1813. 4to. Lacking at least pp1-4 and front cover. Rear cover is separated (1/4 leather and board), and spine is worn. Some damptaining and foxing, minor edge chipping. Placed in loose are the following: ++ 2 handwritten receipts for goods bought from Willis Gaar (one of which includes an 1845 date). ++ Handwritten promissory note for $91 to be repaid to Willis Gaar by Jan. 1, 1856. ++ Handwritten letter by Tho E. Rouzer to Gaar, asking Gaar to sell him a half barrel of corn. May 29, 1835, staining. ++ Several small pieces of paper carrying mathematical computations.
