Lot 1234: WINTER SCENE, A FLEMISH TENIERS TAPESTRY, BRUSSELS WORKSHOP OF VAN DER BORGHT FIRST HALF 18TH CENTURY |
October 26, 2016
London, United KingdomLive Auction
Description: woven within a four-sided red and gold scrolling acanthus frame pattern border (altered top corners), with Brussels town mark in lower right selvedge
Overall measurements: 278cm across the top, 280cm across the bottom, 280cm along the left side, 280cm along the right side. The top border has been turned under by approximately 8cm. Would benefit from being unattached, as creating horizontal folds and tensions in tapestry below. Some repair to light highlights, for example to the sky in top right corner. Some minor repairs and some reweaving to the green/blue of dress of central seated figure. Stable condition. Original brown selvedge with oxidisation. Repairs in areas, for example lower right corner. With Brussels town mark in lower selvedge, with some repairs. Tapestry had linen lining and Velcro attached across the top for hanging purposes. Tapestry has some lovely details including the faces. The composition and colouring are balanced and this is a good size.
