Description:
A wonderful collection of Japanese Bonds and Share certificates, believed to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind, formed by Joseph E. Boling of the U.S.A.. The collection of 1740 pieces can be divided into several sections comprising; Government bonds sold overseas (including those in the Japanese language); Domestic Treasury bonds to about 1930; Domestic Treasury bonds as catalogued by Schwan-Boling in 'World War II Remembered', from 1931 and including some post-war issues after revalidation in 1946; Share certificates and corporate bonds covering all periods from the Meiji Period to the 1950's; Share certificates and corporate bonds of Japanese companies outside the homeland such as Taiwan, Korea and China; miscellaneous documents such as non-Japanese companies operating in the country, lottery documents and a group of issues by Puppet Governments of China, Korea and Taiwan.
Mr Boling made many purchases in Japanese auctions which were not known outside of the Country as well as from established auctions and dealers in Europe and the USA. The collection contains many unique pieces and numerous rare specimens. Each item has a descriptive ticket attached with a price reference, a reference to the Schwan-Boling Catalogue (a copy of which is included in the lot) and details of where the item was purchased. Many small varieties are present, especially in the 1930-1950 War bond issues, and comprise changes in the applied seals, original and replaced coupon sheets, printed dates and the numerous varieties on bonds revalidated in 1946. There is minimal duplication in the collection and is mainly when Mr Boling managed to upgrade the condition of a piece and did not pass on the lesser one. A full database and scans are available on CD upon request.
