Yves Saint Laurent (1936-2008) Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint Laurent was born 1936 in Oran, Algeria. Better known today as Yves Saint Laurent, the ‘revolutionary’ of fashion design started his career in Paris as an assistant of Christian Dior (1905-1957). In 1962 he opened his own fashion house with his partner Pierre Bergé, embodying the French haute couture in the following decades like no other fashion designer. His classic ladies’ suit ‘Le Smoking’, which he also included in his newly created, luxurious Rive Gauche prêt-à-porter line in 1966 and offered in numerous variations since, was particularly influential. With his legendary ‘Beat Look’, ‘Op Art-Fashion’ or ‘Zhivago Look’, YSL not only set fashion trends but Underlined the connection between art and fashion again and again, designing pieces inspired by paintings by Mondrian, Matisse and van Gogh. Numerous museums dedicated exhibitions to the fashion designer’s work. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York even exhibited his designs during his lifetime – an accolade for YSL!
