Description: Item # 41. An ALS by Richard Rush Acting Secretary of State. (August 29, 1780 – July 30, 1859) was United States Attorney General under James Madison and United States Secretary of the Treasury under President John Quincy Adams as well as John Quincy Adams' running mate when he ran for re-election on the National Republican ticket in 1828. Rush also served as United States minister to England and France at various times. He died on July 30, 1859, and is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. Prior to his death, Rush had been the last surviving member of the Madison and Monroe Cabinets. Dated April 22, 1817. “With the most perfect respect, I have the honor to be, Sir, Your very obedient Servant Richard Rush Acting Secretary of State” Size: 7 7/8” x 5 1/8”. Condition folded with writing inside the fold with glue evident in the corners previously attached to a later page. Vertical fold top to bottom through the note. Staining constant with age.
