AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT TALL CHEST OF DRAWERS OVER OGEE FEET, Pennsylvania c. 1780

An exceptional survivor remaining in nearly untouched original condition, this very fine American Chippendale tall chest of drawers was crafted in Pennsylvania during the last quarter of the 18th Century. Probably from the Philadelphia area or of the surrounding counties, it exhibits a bold projecting cornice over a graduated arrangement of three small drawers over five broad drawers flanked by Corinthian fluted columns. The brasses are very early, being two different sets and from the shadowing on the surface we presume the pierced brasses are actually original, but this is difficult to verify - however, the original holes have been preserved, the drawers have not been rebored for any of the brasses and all are excellent period hand cast and filed pieces. The drawers are constructed in the manner typical of Southeastern Pennsylvania, the poplar sides and back board hand dovetailed with large and precise joints, the sides channeled to receive the deeply chamfered pine bottom boards which are secured with large iron tacks along the back edge. The structure is untouched other than the typical drawer and drawer blade patches and repairs to the feet - the interior of the case is a display of tidy construction, the walnut drawer blades backed by full depth dust boards with pine drawer guides flanking them. The back of the case is crafted of three pine vertical boards nailed to the back with neat rows of rosehead iron nails, the unfinished surface nearly black with oxidization throughout. This is a rare and fine acquisition for the serious collector of works from Pennsylvania, particularly collectors who cherish an early surface. It is rough and beautiful, a dramatic piece that is intended to command attention.

Condition Report: [Drawers] Pure structure with some modern nails supplementing dovetails for strength and some added wedging beneath chamfering of bottom into sides for strength; old patches to corners of drawers and lip losses, especially at the corners; replaced brasses using original holes, note the two types of brasses and escutcheons used - it is possible and actually probably that the pierced set is actually original and that the other brasses are replacements, but difficult to verify; shellacked drawer interiors; upper drawers lacking wooden latch locks; no key and locks are untested. [Feet] Replaced 1 1/2" and 2" lower facings on front left and on front right feet (upper majority is original); loss to spur on right front foot; back right foot facing is a late 19th or early 20th century replacement; repairs and cracking to all feet; castor brackets and castors (not shown in pictures, all four included) added to inner struts probably mid-19th century. [Surface] Very early and at least partially original finish with later and heavily oxidized shellac; heavily worn in a most delightful way with nearly black oxidization in some areas. [Case] Three vertical pine board back secured with almost all of it's original rosehead iron nails with a few added modern nails for support; drawer blade patches above lock at third drawer from bottom and lack breakout at lowest drawer blade. Overall preserved in nearly untouched condition for over two hundred years - an outstanding article and an absolutely gorgeous presentation for collectors that appreciate originality.

The item is professionally packaged in-house, palletized and shipped on a tractor trailer with lift gate curbside delivery service. Buyers are notified by the carrier of the delivery date and must make arrangements to receive and inspect the goods (goods left unattended at a residence may not qualify for insurance coverage in the very rare event of damage). Buyers are responsible for unpacking, moving the item into their home and disposing of all packing materials all without assistance from the driver.
* Some areas do not qualify for pre-quoted shipments, including residences with ferry-access, ultra-rural locations, or locations with truck access issues. We reserve the right to disqualify an address from pre-quote under any circumstances upon receiving notification of your delivery address; in these situations, we will offer to simply cancel the order for you, see if a pickup at the nearest freight terminal is a practical option, revise a quote for your approval or offer a quote from a different carrier for your approval.

For a full service two-man indoor delivery, call or email us and we will get a quote from Plycon. Plycon offers a professional and convenient white-glove delivery service that will bring the item into the ground floor room of your choice, unpackaged it for your inspection and remove all packing materials. The item is blanket-wrapped, which we generally find to be the safest and most careful method of shipments. If you select their service, they will contact you directly for payment and insurance election. This service generally costs $350-600 plus insurance depending on the location and shipment size.
FREIGHT DELIVERY (CANADA):
We now offer curbside shipments via common freight carrier to much of Canada! Simply contact us with your delivery address and two phone numbers for a quote. Buyers are responsible for arranging a customs broker and paying all customs/taxes/destination fees where applicable.
IN THE EVENT OF DAMAGE:
Damage is incredibly rare and due to very careful packing and preparation we have been fortunate to see only a small handful of damages. However, we understand the disappointment that can occur in this unlikely event and will work hard to help you through the situation.
Damage for items shipped with USPS, UPS, FedEx or DHL must be reported to us within 24 hours of signature confirmed delivery. We will require the buyer to send us photographs of the packaging and the damage to the item. The buyer will be required to have the item safely packaged again and mailed back to our shop with a pre-paid label. Once we safely receive the item, a refund will be made for the original purchase price plus any shipping via the original payment method.
For pre-quoted common freight carrier shipments, the buyer or representative of the buyer is responsible for being available at time of delivery to fully inspect the packaging and item for damage - under no circumstances should the item be refused, as doing so will void the insurance coverage. In the event of damage, call us immediately and note all damage on the bill of lading while the driver is still present take detailed pictures of the damaged packaging and item, send those images to us and we will assist you in filing the claim and working through the process. Concealed damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery. In most cases, a representative of the insurance firm will need to inspect the item and packaging so be sure to retain all packing materials. The insurance provider and carrier reserve a "right to repair" a damaged item to industry standard. We do work hard to move claims along as quickly as possible, but please note that claims and/or repairs will be settled with the insurance company and carrier prior to any payout to the buyer.
For shipments with Plycon or any other carrier the buyer selects and pays directly, the terms of that carrier's insurance coverage will apply to the shipment and the buyer will be responsible for working through the claim process with the carrier. We are happy to provide paperwork or any other required documentation to assist in the claim process.
