American Gothic Octagonal Library Table New York(201 views)
Description: Item # 5769. An American Gothic Octagonal Library Table Circa 1845-50. Walnut 29.5” tall and 50.5” diameter (point to point). This particular design has surfaced from time to time with different design elements. The most exuberant form is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. To date the manufacturer of this form is unknown, but presumed to be of New York. This example has subdued Gothic decorations. The table is fitted with two deep drawers and two shallow drawers. The drawers are constructed using maple; the secondary woods for the table itself are poplar and pine. There are eight brackets surrounding the base and one bracket has a section that was cleanly broken off: we retain the broken piece. At the termination of each bracket is an acorn decoration. Burled maple is used in each of the various Gothic and oval insets. The drawer pulls are Sandwich Glass Co. Condition: as found; the felt top is missing; scuffing and mars consisted with decades of neglect. This table may have had castors at one time. One of the photos shows the example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
