Description: Item # 40. An ASL by Philippe Régis Denis de Keredern de Trobriand . French aristocrat, lawyer, poet, and novelist who, on a dare, emigrated in his 20’s to the United States, first settling in New York. He served achieved rank of General during the American Civil War and fought at The Battle of Gettysburg, The Petersburg Campaign and The Appomattox Campaign. This letter was written in 1857. He married the daughter of the wealthy banker, Isaac Jones. While living in New York he published Revue du Nouveau Monde and was the Editor of Le Courrier des Etats-Unis. At the start of the Civil War, Trobriand was commissioned and given command of a French regiment known as Gardes Lafayette. Written in French. Size: 7 1/8” x 6 1/4”. Condition: cut corners, evidence of glue marks on the reverse and on the front; staining of the backside glue mark showing through on the front. The text is crisp and very readable. .
