FINE AMERICAN FEDERAL MAHOGANY BOWFRONT CHEST OF DRAWERS

A harmonious and exceptionally well proportioned form, this fine American Federal chest of drawers exhibits a delightful mellowed mahogany throughout, remaining in nearly pristine condition. Crafted of solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, the golden grain flow is magnificent and unbroken. The top is a thin plank of mahogany with an inlaid rim flanked by stringer inlay outlines, in profile conforming to the gentle bowing across the front of the facade. The drawers are also bowed, the fronts formed of sawn poplar in a laminated stack finished in a delightful mahogany veneer. Each retains fully original oval brasses flanking original keyhole escutcheons over original cut steel locks. Ovular stringer inlays outline each of the graduated four drawers. They are hand dovetailed back and front, the bottom board chamfered to rabbet into the drawer frame and secured with glued blocking at regular intervals along the edges. The drawer blades tenon into the case behind mahogany veneers, a pine core backing each blade routed to receive the dust board between each drawer. The back of the case features original poplar planks, many with original iron nails, but re-secured with nails and screws throughout. An original yellowed hand written label is illegible, but still present on the back of the case; it is a 20th century note of provenance, seeming to describe this "Chippendale Chest of Drawers" as belonging to an illegible relative and is apparently dated 1902. The chest rests over four entirely original French feet, each with soft outward splay and retaining original blocking along the underside. Original in almost every single aspect of the chest, this work of art is remarkably well preserved. As an investment grade antique in every aspect, this is a very fine acquisition for any serious collector of American Federal furniture.
Materials: Mahogany: top, sides of case, feet, bars beneath the top on right and left; Mahogany veneers: front of chest, including drawer fronts, inlay around rim; Poplar: backboards, dustboards, sides and back of drawers, laminated "bowed" core of drawers (behind the mahogany veneers); Pine: Feet blocking, underside of case, horizontal blades dovetailed into the top of the sides of the case (through which screws affix the top to the case), runners, bottoms of drawers.
Condition Report: Very attractive surface, not original finish but nicely patinated. Oval pulls untouched and original, original cut steel locks (no key), feet are fully original including all blocking - all feet are cracked with typical repairs/regluing, front-right foot with a chip loss at the crack. Cracking along the grains here and there, not particularly noteworthy. Loss to veneer/inlay at the edge of top in a few places. Very minor scuffing, dings and abrasions throughout. The item is professionally packaged in-house, palletized and shipped on a tractor trailer with lift gate curbside delivery service. Buyers are notified by the carrier of the delivery date and must make arrangements to receive and inspect the goods (goods left unattended at a residence may not qualify for insurance coverage in the very rare event of damage). Buyers are responsible for unpacking, moving the item into their home and disposing of all packing materials all without assistance from the driver.
* Some areas do not qualify for pre-quoted shipments, including residences with ferry-access, ultra-rural locations, or locations with truck access issues. We reserve the right to disqualify an address from pre-quote under any circumstances upon receiving notification of your delivery address; in these situations, we will offer to simply cancel the order for you, see if a pickup at the nearest freight terminal is a practical option, revise a quote for your approval or offer a quote from a different carrier for your approval.

Plycon offers a professional and convenient white-glove delivery service that will bring the item into the ground floor room of your choice, unpackaged it for your inspection and remove all packing materials. The item is blanket-wrapped, which we generally find to be the safest and most careful method of shipments. If you select their service, they will contact you directly for payment and insurance election. This service generally costs $350-600 plus insurance depending on the location and shipment size.
FREIGHT DELIVERY (CANADA):
We now offer curbside shipments via common freight carrier to much of Canada! Simply contact us with your delivery address and two phone numbers for a quote. Buyers are responsible for arranging a customs broker and paying all customs/taxes/destination fees where applicable.
IN THE EVENT OF DAMAGE:
Damage is incredibly rare and due to very careful packing and preparation we have been fortunate to see only a small handful of damages. However, we understand the disappointment that can occur in this unlikely event and will work hard to help you through the situation.
Damage for items shipped with USPS, UPS, FedEx or DHL must be reported to us within 24 hours of signature confirmed delivery. We will require the buyer to send us photographs of the packaging and the damage to the item. The buyer will be required to have the item safely packaged again and mailed back to our shop with a pre-paid label. Once we safely receive the item, a refund will be made for the original purchase price plus any shipping via the original payment method.
For pre-quoted common freight carrier shipments, the buyer or representative of the buyer is responsible for being available at time of delivery to fully inspect the packaging and item for damage - under no circumstances should the item be refused, as doing so will void the insurance coverage. In the event of damage, call us immediately and note all damage on the bill of lading while the driver is still present take detailed pictures of the damaged packaging and item, send those images to us and we will assist you in filing the claim and working through the process. Concealed damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery. In most cases, a representative of the insurance firm will need to inspect the item and packaging so be sure to retain all packing materials. The insurance provider and carrier reserve a "right to repair" a damaged item to industry standard. We do work hard to move claims along as quickly as possible, but please note that claims and/or repairs will be settled with the insurance company and carrier prior to any payout to the buyer.
For shipments with Plycon or any other carrier the buyer selects and pays directly, the terms of that carrier's insurance coverage will apply to the shipment and the buyer will be responsible for working through the claim process with the carrier. We are happy to provide paperwork or any other required documentation to assist in the claim process.
