Hippopotamus Ballerina, Fourth Position by Bj?rn Skaarup(424 views)
Description: Limited edition, signed and numbered sculpture (Ed. 2/6). Columbine and Harlequin are two characters from the late-Renaissance commedia dell?arte and have maintained their allure as popular motifs for painters and sculptors ever since. That loving couple?s masculine virtue and feminine grace inspired this rendition of the sensuous and agile hippo Columbine. The young hippo ballerina is also a tribute to icons from both high and popular culture, and particularly so to Edgar Degas? Ballerina from 1879. Skaarup is known for his playful works that represent animals with man-made and cultural tools, and attributes that underline their particular traits. This particular piece is part of Skaarup's Carnival of the Animals series and pairs with Rhino Harlequin.
