Description: Item # 5572. An American Modern Gothic side chair: made by the firm of Anthony Kimbel and Joseph Cabus. Circa 1878. Walnut; mortise and tenon construction; pierced quatrefoils in the back. The firm exhibited at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 and had a large display of Modern Gothic furniture. The Cooper Hewitt Museum has in their collection a Kimbel and Cabus catalogue and this chair is pictured in the catalogue and is included in the photos. Detailed information about the firm is noted in the book: “In Pursuit of Beauty - Americans and the Aesthetic Movement,” (1986) pages 446.447 plus copies of steel engravings are pictured on pages 154, 155. An identical chair is on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Gallery 743. Condition: as noted in 2 photos the base center strut that protrudes through the leg braces is missing. There is considerable scuffs, mars, and edge roundness apparent. The ebonized surfaces are considerably scuffed as well. The upholstery is probably less then 50 years old; however there may be original foundation material under the upholstery.Size: 35.5: high, 16.75” wide and 18” deep. The seat is 17” high. Restored, this chair will be quite presentable.
