Melissa Marks, Volitia Avoids Puncture, 1999(843 views)
Description: Melissa Marks is a New York based artist whose body of work exploits the flexible structure of "serial context in collusion with the act of drawing" in order to explore ideas about character, performance, Pop, Nature, and Abstraction. The calligraphic gesture and deliberate line exercise an energetic form of visual self-talk, referencing sources as diverse as American comics, Contemporary Japanese Anime, High-Renaissance Fresco cycles, Van Gogh, Monet, Matthew Barney, Sol LeWitt, Edo-period woodcuts and Chinese scroll painting. Veering between the graphic extremes of full color and black & white, subjects include battle, paradise, water, transience and satisfaction. This piece entitled, "Volitia Avoids Puncture" from 1999, features what is perhaps Marks' most famous subject. Volitia is an invented female character and alter-ego who has been the central protagonist of the artist's work since the early 1990s. The name Volitia comes from the word volition or "the act of making a choice or decision." Volitia's actions are not determined by some larger power but through her own choice and desires. The works are a wonderful, elaborate visual story; and this is one such example. The paper size is 14 x 33 inches, and the piece comes professionally framed. The framed size is 19 x 38 inches. Mark's solo exhibitions include Bloomberg Space, London; Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, NY; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, CT and Joya: arte + ecolog?a, Cortijada Los Gazquez, Spain. Her work has been included in exhibitions at PS1/Moma, NY; Artspace, CT and The Drawing Center, NY.
