Michael Scott, Untitled (Kaminski's-- Cocktails, Luncheon, Dinner), 1998(105 views)
Description: Michael Scott, b. 1958, is an American artist based in NY. In 1986, he began to work on a series of concentric circle or target paintings. Heavily influenced by the date paintings of On Kawara, the Japanese artist, he wanted to create a body of work in which no painting was better or worse than another one. In the summer of 1988, after seeing a man wearing a seersucker suit in New York City, he had the idea to make a painting of parallel lines that would be so optical that in theory it would be impossible to look at. Themes like the stripe, the line, the geometric, and linear forms are signature to his paintings, as seen here in "Untitled (Kaminski's-- Cocktails, Luncheon, Dinner)" from 1998. This piece is 17 x 44 inches; and it is signed and dated on the reverse. Through an intensely systematic approach and utilization of straight lines, Scott creates optical paintings that vibrate and move on the canvas. This work consists of a solid black background with white and yellow rigid line-work that reads as an aerial view of a parking lot. Scott has been showing his paintings since the 1980's; and his work has been exhibited at Le Consortium, Dijon, France; PS1, LIC, New York; Le FRAC, Nord-Pas de Calais, France; Mus?e des Beaux Arts, La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland; Centre National d'art Contemporain de Grenoble, Grenoble, France; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Geneva, Switzerland; and MAMCO, Geneva, Switzerland. Michael Scott is represented in New York by Sandra Gering, Inc. and Gallery Xippas in Geneva, Switzerland. His work has been written about in publications such as: Art in America, Artnews, Time Out and the New Yorker.
