Notes: Steve Smith was born and raised in Bozeman Montana. Smith is a contemplative and accomplished oil painter working in a formalistic painterly style. Smith's subject matter reflects contemporary life in the Rocky Mountain West while paying homage to the historic sense of place that defines this region. His subject matter ranges from equine horse culture to architectural portrayals of buildings in Butte, Montana in a select history of what used to be "The Richest Town on Earth". He makes direct common references through contemplative examination and formal figurative statements concerning everyday scenes and activities. Smith captures solitary parts of daily events as tangible objects within themselves. These compositions become moments of pure static posture, isolated from what is typically part of a highly orchestrated series of events. Smith makes these views valuable through the transient nature of observation. Steve Smith has paintings in numerous collections in the western U.S. He has an MFA from Montana State University and is currently represented by ARTCHAUCER Art Gallery. He lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.
