700 Posters in the 70th PAI Rare Posters Sale

NEW YORK, NY – The world’s leading auction house of rare, original poster art will hold its autumn auction on October 30, 2016 with over 700 stunning images from the 1880s to the 1990s. It’s the 70th major auction for Poster Auctions International (PAI), in a tradition for 30 years.

Among the most notable offerings are 38 illustrations by New York artist Edward Penfield, including a full range of his monthly covers for Harper’s magazine between 1894 and 1899 (estimated at $900 - $2000 each), including two nearly complete sets for the years 1897 and 1898.

PAI, known as one of the top auctioneers of original Mucha and Toulouse-Lautrec lithographs, will have its most superb selection yet of these artists. The 40 exquisite works by Mucha include the Art Nouveau master’s series of Times of the Day amd The Arts (each $50,000 - $60,000).

Toulouse-Lautrecs on offer include an original lithograph of the world famous 1891 Moulin Rouge / La Goulue, the artist’s first and most famous poster design, estimated at $250,000 - $300,000; a delightful sketch of an 1896 dinner party ($35-40,000) of which only one other copy is known to exist; and the only known copy of an Aristide Bruant poster before letters ($8-$10,000).

The auction will also include – in a departure from PAI’s standard repertoire – 15 posters and memorabilia associated with Muhammad Ali, who passed away on June 3. They include original photographic prints signed by Ali, Frazier and Foreman, including Ali’s defiant snarl over Sonny Liston shot by Neil Leifer – arguably the most famous sports photo in history (items est: $600 - $1,500).

“We’re particularly thrilled to acquire an original of Cappiello’s famous ‘Ciocolatto Venchi’ (1923) in a tremendous size that we never knew existed,” said PAI owner Jack Rennert, who wrote the definitive compendium on Cappiello. The poster stands at nearly 9 feet tall and more than 6 feet wide, and will likely fetch $14-17,000.

Other extraordinary items include a never-before-seen image created in 1900 for Mele, the Naples department store (est.: $20-25,000); a never-before seen Bugatti ($40-$50,000) and an incredible portfolio of Weimar-era costume designs by Schnackenberg (est.: $17-$20,000).

Vintage posters “are really about art and commerce in this dynamic competition,” said Mr. Rennert. “The best advertising is always artful. But certain images transcend advertising – they’re subtler, bolder, more brilliant than they ought to be – and enter the territory of fine arts, and become icons of moods and atmospheres.”

PAI’s LXX Poster viewing will take place from October 14th-29th, 2016 at Rennert’s Gallery, 26 W. 17th Street, New York, NY 11011.

The auction will take place live both at Rennert’s Gallery, and online, on Sunday, October 30th at 11am.

The 244-page auction catalogue is $40 and is available for order online.
