Our 43rd San Francisco poster sale will be held on April 29, 2017. The auction features 487 beautiful poster lots related to Travel & Sports, Work Incentive, Military & Propaganda, Advertising, Art, Design and Entertainment.

The sale will begin with 126 ADVERTISING posters from the 1890s through the 1960s followed by a selection of items related to DECORATIVE ART, ENTERTAINMENT, CIRCUS, and MODERN DESIGN. A group of 1920s MATHER WORK INCENTIVE posters precedes a collection of European and American MILITARY & PROPAGANDA posters from World Wars I & II. The sale concludes with a large selection of almost 200 TRAVEL, SPORTS & TOURISM posters.

 

Among the auction highlights are Alfredo Vaccari’s splendid Mauser Cigarillos (lot 19), a rare and quite large 1940s Coca-Cola advertising billboard poster (55), Louis Oppenheim’s S. Adam Reitkleidung from 1913 (64), Karl Schulpig’s important 1921 work for the Berlin poster printer Dinse & Eckert (65) and Gian Emilio Malerba’s poster for Mele (81) from the turn of the last century. The art & entertainment section includes a series of smaller size decorative prints by Alphonse Mucha, the rare expressionist poster Die Rote Erde by Martin Schwemer (157) and a rare Friedlander circus poster titled Circling the Circle (206). The propaganda collection features a rare American Ambulance in Russia poster (233) and the famous Ludwig Hohlwein poster Und Du? (263). Among the travel posters two rare zeppelin posters for the Hamburg America Line by Ottomar Anton (313, 314), a group of beautiful Cuba posters form the early 1950s (424, 425, 430), a rare American horse racing poster from the late 1890s (427), a collection of railroad posters, incl. several works by Bern Hill, and an exceptional Cunard White Star poster for the 1939 World’s Fair in New York (472).

It is stated whether a poster is mounted on linen or rice paper, or whether it is not mounted. Potential flaws, such as creasing, tears or losses are noted. In addition, all lots are rated with a letter-code from A (flawless) to D (bad).
