Description: § Philip Jones (British, 1933-2008) Balance of Pinks, 2008 signed lower left "Philip Jones '08" oil on canvas h:59 w: 59 cm "Philip Jones was one of the most distinguished and individual British painters of the generation born in the 1930s". John Russell Taylor, Art Critic - The Times. "My message is that of what I see beneath the surface whether in front, below or above the visual plain." Philip Jones, April 2005. Philip Jones' talent to observe and draw was instilled in him at an early age, when he was taken by his war time nanny to record and sketch the landscape near his parents' home in Sussex. Educated at Malvern College, where he was taught by the Post-Impressionist painter Harry Fabian Ware, Jones went on to the Slade where he was tutored by such luminaries as Tom Monnington and William Coldstream. He was also heavily influenced by the Slade's occasional visitors such as Lucian Freud who bought one of his pictures. Following National Service, Philip Jones continued painting as he moved between careers within the Arts Council. He exhibited regularly in shows and galleries both locally, nationally and abroad and for many years at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He found his individual style very early on and despite his work evolving over five decades, his abstracted, landscape-based work is immediately recognisable. The landscape, which had always been Jones' inspiration - seen in the bright blues and hues of his Mediterranean oils and watercolours - continued to fascinate him when he abandoned London for a more private world in the the Breckland of South-West Norfolk in 1973. He bought Clermont Hall in Norfolk, transforming the old laundry into his studio where he continued to paint and exhibit locally and nationally. With his wife, Frances, he travelled regularly, becoming particularly entranced by the light and colour of the Gambia in West Africa. He lived in Norfolk with his wife, Frances, and four children until his death in 2008.
