Description: Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones British, 1833-1898 Study For Part of the Arras Tapestries of the Quest for the San Graal (the Verdure with Deer and Shields), circa 1891 Inscribed indistinctly (lc) Watercolor with traces of pencil heightened with white on brown paper 11 13/16 x 4 3/4 inches (30 x 12 cm) Provenance: J.S. Maas & Co., Ltd., London The Arras Tapestries were commissioned by William Knox D'Arcy for his dining room at his house Stanmore Hall, in Middlesex, UK. Using designs by Burne-Jones, Morris & Co. wove the tapestries with John Henry Dearle contributing the designs for the floral foregrounds and backgrounds. We are grateful to Dr. Elisa Korb of Misericordia University for confirming the attribution to Burne-Jones, based on photographs, and for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. C
