Description: Hamon, J.-L. The Figurine Seller signed, inscribed and dated 'J.L.HAMON. 1865 POMPEI' (lower left) oil on canvas 10 x 13 in. (26.7 x 33 cm.) Painted in 1865 PROVENANCE Edward Pawlin, New York. Acquired by Robert Isaacson from the above. NOTES The figurine seller, painted in 1865, reflects the interest in France at this period in uniting genre with classical subject matter. The Roman site of Pompeii had been destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and was preserved by a layer of ash and lava that was four meters deep until it was rediscovered in the 18th century. The figurine seller presents a view of the uncovered ruins with the volcano ominously fuming in the distance. The enterprising young girl, shown in contemporary Italian peasant dress, displays an array of antiquities before her: Greek terracotta votive figures, a Roman oil lamp and small bronze vessel, and several coins. Hamon entered the cole des Beaux-Arts in 1842 upon the advice of Ingres. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1847, and subsequently received awards in 1853 and 1855, culminating in his being bestowed the gold medal of the 1867 Exposition Universelle. Between 1848 and 1853, he supported his career in painting by working at the Svres factory. When he was only 34 years old, he was awarded the prestigious title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Hamon's works were included in some of the finest American collections including that of William H. Vanderbilt whose Spring Flowers by Hamon was set in nearby Capri. (Fig 1.) J.-L.
