Historically Important Letter Between Theodore Tilton and Henry Ward Beecher, 1870

Lot 414177: Historically Important Letter Between Theodore Tilton and Henry Ward Beecher, 1870

by Locati Auctions

April 21, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Maple Glen, PA, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $600

Description: A friendly letter from the journalist Tilton to the clergyman Beecher, both prominent abolitionists, written in 1870, informing Beecher of his intent to leave the newspaper. Also included is a handwritten copy of Tilton's poem "Red, White & Blue". Tilton and Beecher became famous for an adultery scandal in which Tilton accused his friend and associate Beecher of having inappropriate relations with his wife. From Wikipedia: "The subsequent trial, which resulted in a hung jury, was one of the most widely reported American trials of the century...The subsequent trials and hearings, in the words of Walter A. McDougall, "drove Reconstruction off the front pages for two and a half years" and became "the most sensational 'he said, she said' in American history"."

Condition Report: The letter is in very good condition aside from having been affixed to the poem. The poem exhibits some damage and soiling at the margins but is otherwise in good condition.
