ATTRIBUTED TO WALTER DEXEL (1890-1973). NEUE WEGE DER PHOTOGRAPHIE. 1928. Collage maquette. 13x10 inches, 35x25 cm.

Lot 11: ATTRIBUTED TO WALTER DEXEL (1890-1973). NEUE WEGE DER PHOTOGRAPHIE. 1928. Collage maquette. 13x10 inches, 35x25 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: ATTRIBUTED TO WALTER DEXEL (1890-1973) NEUE WEGE DER PHOTOGRAPHIE. 1928. Collage maquette. 13 3/4x10 inches, 35x25 1/2 cm. Condition A / A-: creases in corners. Thick paper. A painter, typographer, graphic designer and teacher, Dexel was appointed as the director of the Art Union in Jena, a central German university town. Closely associated with the Bauhaus, he became one of the most prominent practitioners of Contstructivism. In 1935, he lost his position as a graphic design instructor at the Magdeburg Kunstgewerbe Schule, after he was deemed an "entartete" artist by the Nazi regime. Dexel's advertising work is almost strictly typographic, following the principles of the Neue Typographie. This collage, composed of cut out pieces of a flyer for a seminal photography exhibition (see Swann auction #2278, lot 20), has the appearance and size of a catalogue cover design, although it was never realized as such. "Such collages, of cut-up invitation cards, were a cheap alternative for more effective advertising than the small invitation cards, to take into bookstores etc, without having to print posters" (Dexel p. 24). Dexel p. 25, MoMA 664.1999 (var).

Condition A- / B+: minor tears and creases at edges; sharp crease through upper left corner; minor discoloration in image; tape on verso. Printed on thick paper. Volodimer would not be remembered at all as a poster artist if not for the images he designed in 1923, 1924 and 1925 for the first three 24-hour endurance car races that became known as the legendary "Le Mans." The race was originally conceived as a three-year event, in which the winner, determined by whoever amassed the most miles over the three separate races, would be awarded the Rudge-Whitworth Cup.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: SAM HYDE HARRIS (1889-1977) SOUTHERN PACIFIC'S NEW DAYLIGHT. 1937. 23x16 inches, 58 1/2x40 1/2 cm. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image; repaired pin holes in corners. Harris was born in England and moved to Los Angeles when he was 15. His career began as a commercial artist, painting notices on sides of buildings, creating signs and billboards, designing posters and typography and more. In 1920, he was hired by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company to design posters. He also worked for the Southern Pacific. "The major portion of the advertising appeared in brochures, magazines and newspapers, but local advertisements were in the form of billboards and hand-painted posters that appeared in department stores, banks, displays in windows and bulletin boards in ticket offices and lobbies" (Harris p. 18). In the 1930s, "streamlined trains were among the most striking, visible and accessible examples of Modernism" in America (Zega p. 104). "The streamliner was perfectly suited to the poster medium; its smooth airflow profile offered the prospect of a respite from America's stylistic preoccupation with realism" (ibid). This scarce/span poster is an excellent example of American modernist design. Zega 141, Harris p. 103, Affiche Art Deco p. 86.

Lot 124: CHARLES DELAUNAY (1911-1983). ALIX COMBELLE ET LE JAZZ DE PARIS. 1941. 47x31 inches, 120x79 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,800

Description: CHARLES DELAUNAY (1911-1983) ALIX COMBELLE ET LE JAZZ DE PARIS. 1941. 47 1/4x31 1/4 inches, 120x79 1/2 cm. Condition B+: repaired tears, restored losses and overpainting in margins; abrasions and scratches in margins and image; restoration along horizontal fold; pin holes in upper corners. Charles Delaunay was the son of painters Robert and Sonia Delaunay. Charles played a pivotal role in the development and success of jazz in France. He co-founded a jazz society called the Hot Club de France, and in 1935, Jazz Hot, the first French magazine dedicated to jazz. In 1937, working with Pathe Records, he launched a jazz label, Swing, making albums with such stars as Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Django Reinhardt and Alix Combelle. Combelle is depicted in this poster leading the Hot Club de France orchestra. From his parents, Delaunay inherited a strong artistic sense that he used to promote his various projects. He designed the Swing label and also various posters. This poster is not only a rare and wonderful jazz document, but also, it is surprising that in 1941 the occupying German forces would have allowed a poster with the words "Jazz" and "Swing."

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: RAYMOND SAVIGNAC (1907-2002) [CHEF & ROOSTER.] Gouache maquette. Circa 1957. 17 1/4x11 inches, 43 3/4x28 cm. Condition B: creases, abrasions and staining in margins and image; tears and pin holes at edges; embossed stamp along right edge. Mounted on board. Raymond Savignac was one of the most successful and influential poster designers of the post-war period and the inventor of the "visual gag" concept of advertising. He was commissioned by many of France's most popular brands and in many cases (such as Bic), continued working with these companies for years. Within his design arsenal Savignac had a gallery of characters, such as a chef for food posters and a rooster (the French national emblem) for France. For a French food festival abroad he might well combine both, such as here. This is likely a study or an early idea for the poster in lot 127.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

Description: RAYMOND SAVIGNAC (1907-2002) MA COLLE. Gouache maquette. Circa 1951. 34 1/4x44 1/2 inches, 87x113 cm. Condition B: tears at edges, some affecting image; creases, abrasions and staining in image; pin holes at edges; metal grommets in corners. This funny, striking image, with flat colors and bold outlining, is an archetypal demonstration of Savignac's flair for design and humor. No text is needed to help the viewer understand that this glue must be very strong. This maquette has appeared several times in print, including in Graphis magazine #39/44, in 1952, and also in the Biblotheque Forney's catalogue of Savignac's work in 2001 (p. 372), however to the best of our knowledge it was never published.
