A fire-gilt bronze mat weight. Western Han dynasty, 2nd century B.C.

Lot 153: A fire-gilt bronze mat weight. Western Han dynasty, 2nd century B.C.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A fire-gilt bronze mat weight in shape of a seated bear with paws placed on his knees. Green incrustations at the back. Two small holes in the mouth and on the head. Western Han dynasty, 2nd century B.C. The function of these objects has been subject to debate. In 1930 Otto Kümmel thought these bears were weights for the shroud in tombs or used to weigh down the sleeves of burial garments. Today's scholars think that the bears anchored seating or gaming mats for the game of liubo. Famous examples of such bear weights could be found in the former Stoclet and the Oppenheim collections. Other examples are in the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston and the City Art Museum in St. Louis.

A rare and large cloisonné enamel vase. Early 18th century

Lot 174: A rare and large cloisonné enamel vase. Early 18th century

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A rare and large cloisonné enamel vase of rectangular shape with squared off corners, decorated with the flowers of the four seasons prunus, magnolia, lotus and chrysanthemums within a key fret border, and stylized flowers and bats on the foot and neck, all on a blue ground. Liner of pewter. One small repair. Early 18th century. As far as we know only two vases of this shape and size have been published, one is housed in he National Palace Museum in Taipei, the other is today in the Collection of Robert Chang. Possibly these two vases once formed a pair. The Robert Chang piece is said to come from Fonthill House in Wiltshire. The Fonthill heirlooms collection was formed by Alfred Morrison in the 19th century and included a large quantity of objects of art purchased from Lord Lynch of Drylaw brought back to Britain after the sacking of the Yuanmingyuan in 1860. It might well be possible that also this vase from the Jordan collection either came from the Summer Palace or from one of the palaces of the Forbidden City.
