Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Carruades de Lafite Rothschild 1999 (3) Carruades de Lafite Rothschild 2000 (1) A brilliant second wine, the 2000 Carruades de Lafite, aged in 10-15% new French oak, shows wonderfully sweet lead pencil shavings intermixed with an elegant black cherry and cassis nose. A wine of tremendous purity, medium body, and the tell-tale Lafite elegance, this is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next 12-15 years. 90 WA 4 bts. per lot $1,300 - $1,600

Lot 2: Châteauneuf du Pape, Vieilles Vignes (2007)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Châteauneuf du Pape, Vieilles Vignes 2007 Domaine de Cristia Rhone Absolutely brilliant and my favorite wine of the trio of 2007s is their 100% Grenache cuvee, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Aged completely in small, older oak barrels, this wine displays lavish quantities of blackberry and black cherry fruit, an intriguing floral component, and of course, the tell-tale kirsch, licorice, and lavender. Opulent, even voluptuous, and lavishly rich, with exceptional depth, texture, and a full-bodied finish, this is an enormously endowed, stunning example of old, old-vine Grenache made in an uncompromising fashion from a great terroir. Give it another 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades. 96 WA 12 bts. per lot $900 - $1,100

Lot 3: Châteauneuf du Pape, Cuvée de Mon Aïeul (2007)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Châteauneuf du Pape, Cuvée de Mon Aïeul (2007) 6 bts. There are 1,800 cases of the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Mon Aieul. It represents an awesome naked/virginal expression of Grenache from three vineyard parcels planted in sand, clay, and limestone soils. After tasting this wine on five separate occasions, I can state with certainty, it has the most saturated color of any Mon Aieul produced to date. Moreover, its perfume of blueberry liqueur, black raspberries, licorice, roasted meat juices, and lavender is incredible. Full-bodied power, a multilayered mouthfeel, tremendous purity, and awesome concentration put this wine in a class by itself. This sensational Chateauneuf du Pape is still very young, and 3-4 years of cellaring is required. It should be a modern day legend and last for nearly two decades. 100 WA

Lot 5: L'Aventure Optimus Estate (2008), Beaux Frères, Pinot Noir, Belle Soeurs (2008), Silver Oak, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley (1988)Stony Ridge Vineyard Larose (2009)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: L'Aventure Optimus Estate 2008 (1) Beaux Frères, Pinot Noir, Belle Soeurs 2008 (1) Stony Ridge Vineyard Larose 2009 Stony Ridge(1) The 2009 Larose is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Malbec, 15% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. It has a very Bordeaux, Left Bank style nose with very good definition: blackberry, bilberry, a touch of black olive and tea leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but fine tannins and great clarity, though in its nascent stage it comes across very masculine and obdurate. The finish is beautifully delineated and the assertive grip suggests that the '09 Larose will be one destined for the cellar. 92-94 WA 13 bts. per lot $1,100 - $1,300

Lot 8: Chambolle Musigny, La Combe d'Orveau (2006)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Chambolle Musigny, La Combe d'Orveau 2006 Perrot Minot Côte de Nuits. 1er Cru label states 4.5 L however bottle size is actually 6 L. The Perrot-Minot 2006 Chambolle Musigny La Combe d'Orveau Vieilles Vignes smells and tastes of black raspberry tinged with coriander, mace, black pepper, and tangerine rind. Glycerin-rich and creamy, with suggestions of faded lilies, smoked meat, decaying tree stumps, and chalk emerging as it takes on air, its finish reflects Perrot-Minot's evident exploration of the sinister and decadent potential of 2006 in Vosne-Romanée and its vicinity. The long finish here displays powerful kinetics, and there is more than enough material - including fine tannin - to support a decade or more of interesting evolution, and it should be given 3-4 years of rest. 92 WA 88 AM 1 - 6 ltr.(owc.) per lot $1,600 - $2,000

Lot 12: Châteauneuf du Pape, Réserve des Deux Frères (2001)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Châteauneuf du Pape, Réserve des Deux Frères 2001 Pierre Usseglio Rhone The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres elicits “wows”. Aged 60% in neutral wood foudres and 40% in one, two, and three-year old Burgundy barrels, this 2001, which tips the scales at an awesome 16.2% natural alcohol, boasts an inky/purple color along with a sensationally pure bouquet of blackberries, graphite, acacia flowers, licorice, and sweet kirsch liqueur. Unctuously textured and full-bodied, with high tannin as well as a closed personality, this prodigious yet fabulous Chateauneuf du Pape is a potential legend in the making. It requires 3-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for two decades. The texture, purity, and magnificent concentration suggest tiny yields, old vines, and non-interventionalistic winemaking. 99 WA 6 bts. per lot $1,400 - $1,700

Lot 13: Tirecul, Cuvée Madame (1995)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Tirecul, Cuvée Madame 1995 Monbazillac The 1995 Cuvee Madame is as profound a sweet wine as I have ever tasted. Made from 80-year old vines, harvested grape by grape, and with yields of 12 hectoliters per hectare (under one ton of fruit per acre), this wine boasts a glorious nose of apricot jam, tangerine essence, and subtle spicy oak. With its profound richness, blazingly vivid definition, huge body, viscous thickness (with no heaviness), and finish that lasts for nearly a minute, this nectar constitutes one of the most extraordinary sweet wines I have ever tasted. As is the case with so many of the world's greatest wines, the production is insignificant. Only 50 six-bottle cases are being imported to the United States. 100 WA 12(owc.) per lot $2,700 - $3,300

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Barolo, Bussia Vigna Munie 1993 Parusso Piedmont My scores may turn out to be somewhat conservative for this yummy, succulent, gorgeously proportioned Barolo. Parusso's excellent 1993 Barolo Bussia Munie is a denser, more closed, slightly tight wine with a deep ruby color, and spicy, medium-bodied flavors that exhibit admirable ripeness, and plenty of length. I recommend aging this Barolo for another 1-2 years; it should keep for 12-15. 88 WA 88 WS 12 bts.(oc.) per lot $1,000 - $1,200

Description: Colgin Cellars, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tychson Hill Vineyard 2005 Napa The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill, from that gently sloping vineyard just north of St. Helena, has a dense purple color like the other wines, and a beautiful nose of crushed rocks and pure, floral-infused black currant fruit interwoven with espresso and pain grille. The wine is dense, medium to full-bodied, with beautiful tannin, silky, expansive texture, and a long finish. Lot 28: Colgin Cellars, Proprietary Red, Cariad (2002)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Colgin Cellars, Proprietary Red, Cariad 2002 Colgin Cellars Napa Probably the least evolved, although certainly accessible, stunningly complex, and just a point short of pure perfection is the 2002 Cariad. It is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all purchased fruit from the David Abreu-owned and managed vineyards of Madrona Ranch in St. Helena and Thorevilos, behind the Meadowood Resort. Strikingly dark plum/purple in color, with notes of white chocolate, barbecue smoke, graphite, blueberry and blackberry liqueur as well as espresso roast, this is a tremendously complex blend that hits the palate with full-bodied opulence, terrific richness and intensity, and wonderfully silky tannins. The entire wine saturates the palate yet is never heavy, instead rather ethereal. This is an extraordinarily elegant, complex, yet authoritative example of a creative blend from some of the finest terroirs in all of Napa Valley, brought to life by the extraordinary passion and abilities of owners Ann Colgin and Joe Wender. If the other three wines seem to have fully matured, this wine probably won't reach its plateau for another 2-3 years and it will keep for 15 or more. 99 WA 3 bts. per lot $1,000 - $1,200

Lot 31: Colgin Cellars, Cabernet Sauvignon, Herb Lamb Vineyard (1995)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Colgin Cellars, Cabernet Sauvignon, Herb Lamb Vineyard 1995 Napa The equilibrium between the wines' component parts - new oak, alcohol, tannin, acidity, and extract - is right on, with nothing out of place. The 1996 and 1995 could be mistaken for identical twins, although close examination reveals that the 1995 has a slightly firmer tannic edge, and the 1996 slightly lower acidity. However, both possess Colgin's tell-tale opaque black/purple color, phenomenal aromatics consisting of blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, cassis, subtle new oak, and a notion of floral scents (is it acacia or lilac?). In the mouth, both wines are full-bodied, remarkably supple and opulent, with a purity and presence of fruit that must be tasted to be believed. 98 WA 4 bts. per lot $1,800 - $2,200

Description: Colgin Cellars, Cabernet Sauvignon, Herb Lamb Vineyard 1997 Napa Sadly only 400 cases were made of the 1997. The nearly perfect 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard was bottled in May, 1999, and appears to have recovered beautifully from bottle shock. Saturated black/purple-colored with a knock-out nose of blackberries, blueberries, lavender, licorice, and toast, this is a profound, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. It displays a seamless, velvety texture, layers of concentrated fruit, and a 45+ second finish. Am I being too conservative in not giving it a 3-digit score? 99 WA 2 bts. per lot $1,000 - $1,200

Description: Colgin Cellars, Proprietary Red, Cariad 2005 (1) Colgin Cellars, Proprietary Red, Cariad 2004 (1) Colgin Cellars, Proprietary Red, Cariad 2006 (1) Meriting the same rating I gave it at its release, the 2006 Cariad is composed of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. One of the stars of the vintage, this thrilling, opaque purple-colored wine offers up sweet espresso, jus de viande, blackberry, blueberry, flower and chocolate aromas. A fabulous texture, tremendous purity, sensational brightness and authoritative flavor intensity allied to striking complexity and elegance are the signature of this creative blend from the David Abreu vineyards of Thorevilos and Madrona Ranch. Six hundred cases were produced. Give this wine another 3-4 years of cellaring and enjoy it over the following 15+. 98 WA 3 bts. per lot $1,100 - $1,300

Description: Colgin Cellars, Proprietary Red, IX Estate 2004 (1) Colgin Cellars, Proprietary Red, IX Estate 2005 (1) My favorite of the 2005 Colgins is the 2005 IX Proprietary Red Estate, a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The good news is that there are 1,500 cases of this blockbuster wine, which has a Bordeaux framework but the exuberance and richness as well as fruit purity of a great Napa wine. Deep purple in color with an extraordinary nose of scorched earth, blueberries, and black currants intermixed with some subtle charcoal notes, spice, box and spring flowers, it is very full-bodied, but beautifully structured and well-delineated. With good acidity despite what is an extremely high pH (3.9), the total acids are reasonable. This is a beauty of harmony, power, and great intensity, but it is light on its feet, and an exceptional example of what this high-elevation hillside estate vineyard is capable of producing. This wine should hit its prime in 5-6 years and last for three or more decades. 97 WA 2 bts. per lot $600 - $800

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Philip Togni, Cabernet Sauvignon 1998 (5) Philip Togni, Cabernet Sauvignon 1998 (1 mag.) Loose capsule. Although 1998 was a challenging vintage in California, this 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has evolved into a beautiful wine. If you want to throw a California Cabernet into a blind tasting of first and second-growth Bordeaux, this is the wine to choose. A dead-ringer for a top-class Pauillac, it offers leafy, cedary, licorice, red and black currant, and roasted herb aromas. In the mouth, the Bordeaux-like austerity continues with noticeable tannin as well as a slightly dry finish. Nevertheless, this wine is showing well, although I would not hold it longer than 5-6 years, atypical for a Togni. 90 WA 5 bts. & 1 mag. per lot $700 - $900
